Setting Up For Fall
Fall, I have a love/hate relationship with this season. I’m simply all about the hot weather. When fall hits, I am reminded of the brutal cold temps looming ahead. But that is also what I love about fall. The transition into cooler weather and the gorgeous scenery Michigan offers us is breathtaking. The orange and red leaves, the unforgettable sunsets, packs of birds flying overhead, migrating. It stirs this need in me to start getting my home ready. When I think of fall I think of the coziest season and that is what I like my home to reflect.
I honestly am not sure how time flew this year. Here I am thinking we still have time, but next thing I know, my followers on instagram were asking me to show them how I would prepare for the season. Huh?? Fall? Already? Do I HAVE TO take down my blush pink pillows yet? Needless to say, I had not thought ahead and was SO not prepared. What color palette am I going to go with this fall? That’s the first think I like to focus on. It offers me an anchor that leads on to the next few steps I need to take.
If you followed me during my fall shopping on my personal Instagram page (hyperlink to my personal IG page) then you know I went shopping totally unprepared. And with three kids in tow, might I add. I walked down the aisles opening myself up to get inspired. That’s key, accepting and opening yourself up for inspiration as you look around. I was drawn to a mercury pumpkin that featured a dark plum color on the bottom half. I was so drawn to the color that I knew right there and then that this piece would serve as my inspiration. Plum, silver, charcoal and gold!
I grabbed a few more unique looking pumpkins, some décor that were in the plum color I chose and we were ready to get started! Having already purchased fall décor throughout the year, I knew I was going to re use a lot of the pieces I had stored from years past. I laid out all the décor I wanted to work with on my kitchen counter… old and new as I set out to prepare my home!
When it comes to decorating for the season, I am all about infusing a hint of seasonal décor and focusing more on the color and visual. If I add too many pumpkins for example I find myself getting tired of it after a week or so. Instead I focus on Faux fur pillows, metallics, warmer tones, throw blankets, candles, wicker baskets by the fireplace… these are all things that remind me of fall and help make my home a cozy place to retire in after a long day of work!
The beauty of decorating is that we all have different ways to showcase our taste and style. That should be celebrated! The end goal should always be feeling relaxed and happy when you walk in your front door every day. Focus on that.
Since my home has an open layout, from family room and into the kitchen, I like to make sure the décor and color palette flows well throughout that open concept.
Starting with my family room, I changed out the pillows using metallic and faux fur to introduce the cozy look I go for. Plum accent pillows came in and oh my! What a gorgeous color!
When you’re working with bold accent colors, makes sure you add a touch of it through out the room to avoid overdoing it and overwhelming yourself. A few accent décor in plum color was introduced into my living room.
My coffee table got the majority of the pieces I bought.
Faux floral stems graced my vase on my credenza.
Remember when I said I like to add a few pumpkin décor around the house and not over do it? Here is where I styled a few pumpkins in my family room. Subtle and to the point.
The pumpkin that inspired it all!
Moving on to our kitchenette area, styling a centerpiece for your dining table is a great way to celebrate the season!
My kitchen island always has fresh flowers styled with a candle and tray. I styled fresh white hydrangeas and plum colored flowers in my vase.
Donuts and candy corn mixed with salted peanuts are a big reminder of fall for us so those are added on my kitchen counters.
My kitchen sink pedestal gets a makeover with plum colored orchids and a pumpkin candle.
My coffee station gets a tiny update with new coffee mugs.
My Foyer also sees a huge change! Faux fur pillows go on my settee.
My console welcomes my guest with warmer toned décor and textured candles.
Hints of fall go into my formal living room. Small pumpkins, faux fur blanket and pillows and candles!
I am still working on styling my front door but my side door is ready to welcome my guests!
I still have a few things to do here and there but the majority of my decorating is done. It feels so good waking up in the morning, sipping my coffee and getting to enjoy the updates throughout my home.
I hope you like what you’ve seen so far! I am excited to share more as I get more active with my blog! Always inspired by you!
