How I Followed My Passion And You Can Too!

WOW! Is this possible? Almost 6 years since the launch of Inspire Me, where it all began as just an idea, an outlet to a person who was struggling to find her place in this world. What am I meant to do? It always felt like something was missing, a piece of the puzzle to make me feel complete. With an amazing husband who always supports me, beautiful girls that filled my time, a loving family, how in the world could anyone still feel like something was missing in her life? Believe me when I say, I asked myself that question over and over, wondering how one with such a fulfilled life still could feel like something was missing. A tug, a pull, a need. That’s what it felt like for me. I realized that what was missing is passion for my career, love for something that I can do for ME that would get me excited each morning. Now don’t get me wrong, my family certainly did that for me and more but I truly believe that everyone needs to have their own “thing”, their “purpose” in life. (Whether it be work or just an outlet for your passion like crafting at home). And that “thing” or “purpose” can be anything but it needs to make your heart dance, period.

Let me tell you, when I nervously started my Instagram account, I never told anyone about itinitially. It was my own secret, my outlet. With it’s success I can tell you what I learned from my journey and hope that my story will inspire that person who is struggling, trying to figure out their place in this world just like I did 6 years ago. This was my journey and of course it could, actually IS, different for every person but I believe there are a few factors that are always consistent when it comes to success in your life, no matter what it may be. I hope you find them helpful.

1. Passion

Find out what your passion is. And when I say passion I mean what makes your heart beat with excitement when you think about it. What are you good at? What can you see yourself doing for the rest of your life? What is it that you feel you can make a difference in? What is it that you can offer the world that is unique? When I launched Inspire Me! Home Décor, it was to share and post inspiration that spoke to my design esthetic. Share my work and help homeowners with design questions. This was not available at the time of launch. All Home Décor pages offered minimalistic looks, traditional looks or modern/contemporary style inspiration. That glam, elegant look without sacrificing functionality and comfort is what I love and yet it was nowhere to be found.  Once I started my page, it felt like people were looking at glamorous interiors with new interest. Something they can incorporate in their own homes yet still enjoy their home and make a statement. And so my page took off.

2. Go For It

Many times what holds us back from starting anything is fear and making that first step. When I figured out what I wanted to do, it was not an easy decision to make especially since I had invested so much time and money into my schooling and was 3 semesters short of graduating with my political science degree. Not to mention the whole idea of becoming a lawyer was a goal of mine since I was 12, my parent’s expectations etc… But they understood and I knew (for me personally) I would rather change paths right there and then instead of wasting any more time and go through the motions. It’s never too late!

You have to figure out what your first step needs to be… once you figure out your passion and your calling in life. TAKE THAT FIRST STEP! Is it enrolling in school? Launching your blog website? Taking to social media to share that passion? Apply for a job in the field? Go out and buy supplies to begin?  Take your first step and you will figure out the rest as you go. You have got to test the waters to see what will work and what won’t. There is no set manual that can tell you exactly what will happen for you or how your journey will turn out, nope, there isn’t. But who would want a set manual anyway? You want your own adventure. You WILL fall, you WILL make mistakes but embrace them and learn from them. Let those mistakes be a lesson of what NOT TO DO and what TO DO and they will enlighten your journey.

3. Stay True To Yourself

ALWAYS! The key to succeed in anything that you do is to always stay true to who you are and never let success, failure or time change that. It’s a challenge but what makes your talent special is you and only you. Success comes from originality not imitation and if you are inconsistent, that will lead to confusion and ultimately possible failure.

4. Write It Down

Write down your goals and your vision. Writing them down will keep you on track and you won’t lose sight of why you started in the first place. Sometimes, we need a refresh, a step back to remind us what our purpose is, our goals and why we started to begin with. It can get overwhelming. You need a reminder as you succeed to avoid losing sight of your goals and you need a reminder if you face a road block to inspire you to keep plowing through!

5. Don’t Lose Sight

Don’t ever lose sight of why your started, make sure your intentions and goals are clear. Of course those might have to be adjusted as you go but the bigger picture should always stay consistent. For me, it’s making sure that I am always happy and fulfilled during this journey. Not the money, but the thrill of the adventure! Pushing the boundaries and seeing how far I can go. The minute it becomes about money then you will lose your identity, your uniqueness and your credibility.

XOXO,

Farah

Tips To A Productive Kitchen Spring Clean - Part 2

Thank you for your patience and all the love on part 1 of this Kitchen Spring Clean series. Today, I am sharing with you part 2, where I focused on kitchen deep clean, organization as well as tackling my fridge. With a busy household filled with kids, its hard to keep up and make sure everything is in it's place. As much as I would love that, it's definitely not realistic and not the case. Our drawers get disorganized, items in the fridge get misplaced, counters get dirty, but that is the joy of having a full household. It's a matter of upkeep and constant reorganizing, cleaning and placing things in the right spot... your day to day life and cleaning routine does that for you. But when it comes to spring cleaning or deep cleaning your kitchen, it's going after surfaces you have not touched in months. Over the cabinets, deep cleaning your appliances, wiping down the inner and outer parts of your drawers and cabinets... etc. I highly recommend tackling that to do list at least 3 times a year if you can. It will keep you on top of things and prevent too much dust and grime from accumulating. It will also help keep your appliances in good shape since we use them on a daily basis.

How I Tackled My Pantry Spring Cleaning & Getting Organized! Part 1

As much as I love organization, I could never get my pantry organized the way I would have loved it to be. With kids and a busy household, the minute I had our pantry organized, it would get messy again. When we bought this home, that was one of the things on our to do list, change out all the metal shelves in all the closets to wood shelves. As we tackle that project one room at a time, I finally was able to get it done in our kitchen in time for my spring cleaning routine!

With deeper and more sturdy shelves to work with, I was able to work with organizational tools that helped me during this process. I can't tell you how important these items were and how easier it has been to 1. find things in there 2. keep myself and my family organized.

With a disorganized pantry, I would easily lose track of what I had and what we needed. Grocery store trips would end up with us either buying the same item we already had or NOT buying what we needed.

Aside from getting organized, cleaning out your pantry every few months is essential. As food gets expired (sometimes without our knowledge) its a good idea to go through all your items and make sure everything is in order. Wiping down your pantry floors and shelves (metal or wood) will help keep your room smelling fresh. Food flies and ants are a common problem in areas that holds food as well, so constant upkeep is key.

A Tour Of My Walk In Closet

This project took 9 years to happen. Since we first bought our home, I knew it was something I wanted to tackle eventually. But other projects always took priority over the closet. My closet unit is from Modular Closets and my island was ordered from Home Depot online. Modular closets is a DIY organizational system. But if you are tackling a project like this one, I highly recommend you have a professional at hand to do the install for you if you are not a DIY kind of person... It is a huge project to undertake. In fact, it took us about 10 days in total to get this project done. I can definitely say it was worth it. When your closet is organized, I feel like it sets the tone for your day. You can find your clothes easily and everything is put away where it should be.

My home, and making my home a welcoming space and a comfortable haven for all who enter, is my passion!  We all have our various interests, activities, and hobbies in life…but, when all is said and done, the most important focus for all that we do is…family.️  I want my family to love their home environment and to always feel that it’s more than a safe structure and a place to reside…it’s a beautiful respite, a place for building warm memories, and an inviting space that always feels like a home and not just a house.

No matter how much you love that go-to dress, or shirt in your closet, or your most comfy pair of jeans, you’d still get very bored wearing the same outfit, or the same accessories every single day.  Right?!  Home design is such a close cousin to fashion.  You style or wear or decorate with the things you love, but it’s a good idea to change that look periodically to keep things, fun, interesting, and appealing.  Keeping a space fresh and updated, and eye-appealing, doesn’t mean constantly changing one’s design aesthetic.  I’m definitely a neutral decor-loving designer, but thrive on finding new ways to add a pop of interest or color to an, otherwise, neutral design aesthetic.  I’ll always decorate, design, and choose pieces within the glam, modern to transitional genre, while at the same time, will continually switch out pieces, and layer in new ones while, still, staying true to my style.

And, “refresh styling” really is not difficult to do.  If you invest in the basic “core” pieces in your home, in relatively neutral shades, you can still interject pops of color, and texture, and interest, simply by changing out the pillows, throws, artwork, lamps, lampshades, ottomans, and accessories (i.e.,  candle holders, trays, vases, urns, baskets, picture frames, and fresh or faux botanicals.)  Some pieces that will more often remain constant fixtures in a space, will be the large furniture, large area rugs, paint color, and custom draperies.  Beauty is in the details; and details can be layered in subtly, applied boldly, or just tweaked from time to time, to give new life and interest to a space.  Have fun, experiment, try new looks, and don’t allow your views and home surroundings to become mundane or stagnant.  It’s amazing what a little facelift or a slight refresh of a space can do for you and your family!  There are no rules, except to be comfortable in your own home, keep in mind the functionality of a space and how your family uses it, and most importantly, to remember everyone’s style is not the same, and that’s a great thing!  After all, interior design is an art!  Learn to embrace and appreciate “your” style and the things that you love, because they’re what make your home special and unique to you!  No matter what the current trend or the color of the month, keep in mind what makes YOU happy in your home!

One of the easiest ways to keep your home feeling fresh and updated, is to switch out your decor pieces with the “changing seasons.”  A few small changes can make a big impact and breathe life into a space.  Interjecting a new color palette, for the season, can lighten or darken and change the whole mood of a room, without spending a lot of money.  Not ready to switch out pillows, and vases, and candle holders?!  You can still easily and inexpensively refresh a room, or a neutral decor,  with the simplicity of fresh or faux flowers.  Your local grocery probably even carries some beautiful blooms that can add so much life to a room for only a few dollars.  I pick up the loveliest flowers at my local grocery all the time, while already there grocery shopping!  Try adding flowers to your coffee table, dining room table, kitchen countertop, entryway console, bedroom nightstand,  bathroom vanity, or breakfast nook table to add interest to a neutral decor!!  Trust me…you’re apt to smile every time you walk by and take in their colorful beauty!

Whether you love a neutral color palette in your home design, like me…or you’re all about a myriad of bold colors, embrace what makes you happy in your home environment and what works for your family.

Have fun with design, and most importantly, let it reflect “YOU”!!  I’m sure you’ve read the profound interior design quote that I love to bring to the forefront in every design:  “The details are not the details.  They make the design.”

– Charles Eames

And, I could not agree more!!  I’m a firm believer that paying attention to the “details” in a design can be “everything” in making a space your own haven.

5 Design Secrets for a Room You’ll Love

Are you ready to update a room but don’t know where to start? Farah Merhi from Inspire Me Home Décor shares her ultimate style guide to designing a space you’ll love for a long time—plus, her tips are budget-friendly! Often when her Instagram followers ask her how to update a room, they don’t know where to start. There’s no big secret, just a few easy ideas and you’ll be on your way to glamorous new look without breaking the bank. Her first rule is that the big stuff needs to be versatile–and the easiest way to do that is to choose a neutral color and go for durability. A sofa like that has a classic silhouette like this one, with a solid wood frame, and durable linen blend fabric in a neutral color has plenty of style. You’ll never get sick of the style and it’ll last a long time. Sometimes when people hear “neutral” they think boring. Wrong! Just like your wardrobe, where you invest in well-made jeans and shoes that will withstand trends and wear-and-tear, it’s worth investing in a sturdy sofa and solid coffee table. Then, like our closet accessories, we can have a little more fun with pattern, color, and trends in accessories, only instead of shirts and jewelry, let’s have fun with decorative accents in this room, just like with this wall art duo. We love the botanical print and the bright bold flamingos! Wall art can completely transform a room. Rule number two is to anchor the room with a rug. A new rug will make the space look clean and new. This overdyed rug has a traditional pattern but the super saturated tone is the glam update that I’m looking for. It also is the perfect size to center the furniture on and ground the room. Rule number three is to update pillows seasonally. One of the most cost-effective ways to update any room with a fresh new look is to change out pillows. You can also simply get new pillow covers to change the look throughout the year. Speaking of seasonal updates, depending on the climate where you live, it might be worth investing in a second set if curtains, like these double-lined options. Where Farah lives, winter means drafty windows. Double-lined curtains insulate the home and can block light. If your climate doesn’t change, your selection can be purely decorative. Remember to always install curtain rods a few inches below the ceiling to add height—it’s one of Farah’s favorite design tricks! Rule number four is to add plenty of balanced lighting to make the space inviting. Without proper lighting, you won’t use a room all the time. Lamps on side tables make the space inviting and add style. Black lamp shades? You can’t go wrong with this bold look. The last rule is to finish the room with a throw blanket. A throw instantly boosts the comfort of a space, adds a pop of color, and it’s really inexpensive. Luxury fabrics like cashmere, merino wool, and faux fur make a huge difference and last a long time. Keep the throw blanket draped over the side of the sofa for a relaxed yet elegant look. Plus, we love having one close by to cozy up to. There you have it! At home, you can start with what you have. Whether its furniture from the same room or from around your home, a new layout will give the room a fresh look. Thanks for watching! We hope you learned something while you were here! Happy shopping!

How to Decorate a Living Room 4 Different Glam Ways

Style guru Farah Merhi from Inspire Me Home Décor is going to show us how to transform a living room four times to show you a few options that will glam up your space on a budget! One of her design rules is to invest in neutrals, like this sofa, so you can change out your look. This chesterfield is perfect and you’ll see just how versatile it can be. Let’s get started! Look one: is Organic Glam because of its natural influences. Elements like gold leaf, marble, and earth tones will harmonize together instead of competing, which makes for a very calming look. Farah pulled the color scheme from this wall art and then mixed in these pillows to introduce more color. A sculptural modern side chair and a beaded pillow add structure to balance the simplicity of the succulents, organic shapes, and plant motifs. And this tray adds just a little bit of shine – check out how Farah did it in another video! If you love ultra-feminine colors, then say Bon jour to Parisian Glam. This has all of the pastels that are totally on-trend right now: soft pinks, blues, minty greens. How dramatic is this slipper chair? For Farah, this is the perfect place to kick back and unwind. And check this out – everyone loves a chandelier, but this is an easy way to bring some old school opulence to your space: a crystal table lamp! Farah mixes in some of this mercury glass to bring out the sparkle. Next up is a HUGE trend. Everything from music to fashion is going tropical, and the look is easy and really fun to glam up. Here’s the secret: go bold with color, but bring it back down to earth with natural textures. Gold, green, and pink hues are perfect to bring a little tropical luxury home, even if the closest you’re getting to the beach is a pina colada in your PJs. This look is all about having fun and mixing it up – mix patterns and colors, you really can’t mess up. Farah finishes off this look with some leopard pillows, because why not? The colors are neutral, so they’ll help ground the look. The last look might surprise you, but I totally love it! This is a look that Farah calls Man Glam. It’s not frilly or fluffy, but this moody and dramatic style is so inviting and relaxing! It’s all about dark, plush fabrics that make a space feel more intimate and sophisticated. And check out this rug - the geometric twist on a traditional thickly woven area rug is both sturdy and effortlessly cool.A stone vase and marble coasters anchor the adventuresome brass telescope and compass, and they go perfectly with this map art print.

DIY Gold Leaf Tray

Style expert Farah Merhi shows us how to transform this simple white ceramic tray into a gilded showstopper. Farah was inspired to create this DIY because gold leafing has been popping up everywhere – and some of the trays are so expensive! This is practical and pretty, and will save you roughly $100 off what you’ll find in stores. This DIY is a fast, inexpensive and easy alternative that anyone can do. You can use real or faux gold leaf, which comes in paint or sheets. Farah chose the sheets because they’re really easy to work with and give a more authentic look. First, let’s get the tray ready by wiping any dust off with a dry cloth. Then, think about the design you’d like. You can create a freeform design or make your own stencil with painter’s tape like these stripes. Farah is doing an organic design because she is using this on a nature-inspired coffee table. Next, with the foam brush apply a thin and even coat of gold leaf adhesive. Now, wait about 30 minutes or until the adhesive turns from clear to white and tacky. Next, carefully peel pieces of gold leaf and gently rub them onto the tray. You can use a sponge brush to smoothen the gold leaf and to buff off any excess flakes. Finally, seal the gold leaf and let it dry for 30 minutes. The sealer will protect the gold leaf from light, dust, and moisture that way the tray will last for a long time. And voila! Farah loves this sparkling new tray to complete her coffee table. You can style with succulents, candle, coasters, etc. or have them empty to serve as a catchall as needed! Happy shopping!

My Daily Cleaning Routine

I get asked regularly how I keep my home clean and spotless with kids. There really is no secret. I have a daily cleaning routine that I try to stick to, realistically this is something I can tackle every day... but of course I have my days where I just want to crawl into bed and completely ignore the mess. Give your self some slack and don't be hard on yourself. Establish a routine that would tackle the easy clean up and go for it when you get a chance. I also like to clean up or tidy up throughout the day to avoid a complete pile up of work at the end of the day or the next morning. My older kids are expected to pitch in and help with chores (while they complain and whine about it... but who's listening? Totally ignoring their complaints). I have found that if you do tackle your chores early in the morning and at night before bed time, it leads to a more productive day ahead!

5 Ways to Style a Coffee Table

Design expert Farah Merhi from Inspire Me Home Décor show five easy ways to style your coffee table. This is one of the most common questions Farah gets asked on social media. Try one of these tricks, and you’ll rock the look flawlessly. Ok, option one is called tray chic. A tray is perfect because it corrals everything on table. The secret here is to choose a material that’s different than what your table is made out of. This mirrored tray will add dimension to this glass coffee table, but something like this gold leaf tray is perfect to contrast the glass top. This is a really easy DIY that Farah will show you how to make in another video. The second way to arrange your coffee table with a stylish stack. From art books to vintage perfume bottles, an organized array shows personality. A stack of inspirational books is clever, colorful, and eye-catching. Now, onto number three. This is what Farah calls haute height. Coffee table décor doesn’t have to be flat. Vary the height and scale of unique mementos with a mini statue, like this giraffe and this turtle trinket tray. Place the tallest item away from the edge and in the center of the table, then offset with another item around half its height. The fourth way to arrange your coffee table is called floral fresh. Farah loves to highlight natural elements, from succulents in a rattan tray to fresh flowers in a glass cloche. A small bouquet can be timeless and stunning. You don’t have to have a green thumb either—faux flowers can add a sense of freshness, too, and no one will be able to tell the difference. Lastly, the “less is more” approach is one of Farah’s favorites—its clean and tidy. Showcase just one item; such as a tray, or plant. If you think it looks cluttered, reshuffle the items until you like how the coffee table looks. Farah likes to update the look every few months to keep the room looking fresh. There you have it! Have fun glamming it up! Find all these products and more at Wayfair.com!

Let's Talk Smoky

This year has seen a huge shift towards warm and rich colors that include everything from metallic, mixing and matching metals and the coveted matte finish. Homeowners are gravitating to the warmer tones that make a space feel inviting. They want their guests to feel welcome and relaxed without sacrificing elegance, which has fed the popularity of this ‘Smoky’ trend. I have partnered with Kohler to talk about this trend and how to bring it to life.

The ‘Smoky’ trend has caused a shift in the neutrals we are seeing in furniture and home décor. Brown, black, gold, gray, silver and beige are functioning as neutrals, while offering up a bold, warming look. The ‘Smoky’ look builds on these neutrals, but requires a careful mixing of hues and textures. While mixing and matching, it is important for all of the details to complement one another to create a cohesive design for your space.

Keep in mind, warm tones do not equate to darker shades. The warmth of the ‘Smoky’ trend can be achieved using colors with warm undertones, which range from light to dark. For those who love their lighter furniture, fear not! Accents with rich tones and textures can complement your lighter furniture. Accents like tinted mirrors, metallic décor, and darker metals accentuate the warm tones of your lighter furniture, bringing all of your furniture and décor pieces together to complete the ‘Smoky’ look.

My favorite part about working with rich hues and warm tones is that they can be incorporated into any style. Whether your home is modern, contemporary, farmhouse, or traditional, the universal color palette of the ‘Smoky’ look complement nearly every style in any room of your home. The look can be customized to your style. For example, you can keep your metallic accents clean for a modern look, add shiny or crystal accents for a sultry look, or bring in distressed décor for a farmhouse look (hello antiqued mirrors!).

As a homeowner on a budget, you may be skeptical about adhering to trends as they come and go. While the accents of the ‘Smoky’ look are new, the neutral tones it builds upon are universal and can be incorporated into any design. To achieve the ‘Smoky’ look (without breaking the bank!) build on versatile and neutral hues, use your accent pieces to complete the look and add that extra pop of color, texture, and style. Switching out your pop of color, or even adding decor pieces with additional texture, have the ability to transform your space for a cost as small as a few pillows or décor pieces. Before you know it, your home will have a sexy, on-trend look without an untouchable or transient feel to it.

My home has been infused with the “Smoky” look…from the kitchen to the family room, dining room and even bedroom! As I have updated nearly every space in my house, my powder room has been left neglected. I have put off the project of designing this space for a while, trying to figure out the best direction, looking high and low for the perfect inspiration. I recently came across this powder room design from Kohler and instantly knew I had found my muse. The details in this image spoke to me, they represent the feel I want my powder room to have while adding my personal design style to complete the look. How to Make the Most Luxurious Bed

There’s nothing better curling up in a freshly made bed. Farah Merhi is here to show you everything you need to make the most luxurious bed ever and how to get the look and feel of a glamorous, hotel-like look and coziness in your own home. First, let’s start with a sturdy bedframe and plush upholstered headboard. This tufted option is classically glam—Farah loves it! We spend a third of our lives in our bed, so we think it’s worth investing in. Do you feel like some of your best sleep is at a hotel? Well, besides the fact that you may be on vacation, Farah will let you in on a secret—it’s all because of a mattress pad! A plush mattress pad with a stretched skirt to keep it in place like this one will have you drifting off to sleep in no time. Let’s talk sheets. Always choose high thread count and natural materials for the softest and most durable fabric. Buy a sheet set to ensure fitted and flat sheet and pillow cases are the same softness. Make sure the fitted sheet gets tucked around each corner, and go for an extra deep sheet if you have a pillow top or tall mattress. Another tip! Fold the flat sheet under the mattress with the quilt, comforter, or duvet. To Farah, luxury is all about a fluffy, downy duvet. Add a duvet cover, like a ruffled option which adds a soft texture to the room. For extra coziness and warmth, choose an elegant velvet quilt like this diamond embossed set. Super fluffy pillows should be layered back to front. For a queen or full-sized bed, you’ll need two European pillows and two standard pillows, plus one accent or bolster pillow. If you have a king size, just add a European size pillow by the headboard. Finish the bed with a throw blanket. This faux fur option is so soft and beautiful and is perfect for fall until spring. Of course when you are in your bed, the décor around your room will affect how relaxed you are. A pair of table lamps, gorgeous wall art, and decorative boxes are reminder that this is a place to relax and unwind. Thanks for watching! 5 Ways to Get Creative with Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper

Go bold with wallpaper, without the paste or commitment to covering an entire room. Farah Merhi shows five creative ways to use peel-and-stick wallpaper. Don’t be afraid of using wallpaper, this temporary option is easily removable but is sticky enough to be used again and again. Here are Farah’s favorite ways to use this design staple in a glamorous way. First things first, measure height and width of the surface, pre-cut each of the panels to fit, align the pattern for large designs, peel the backing, reposition if necessary, and use a squeegee to smooth air pockets. Finally, trim excess. Always apply to clean, smooth surfaces. The second way to use temporary wallpaper is in the a door—this unexpected placement adds character and color to any door. Here, Farah cut and placed pieces inside the molding on this door, but you can also cover an entire door. This creates an unexpected focal point and can really break up the space. Third, use peel-and-stick wallpaper on a nightstand. Cover an old or unfinished nightstand duo with temporary wallpaper and some paint for a stunning makeover. See how Farah transformed this pair from blah to beautiful in another video. Fourth, you can use temporary wallpaper as wall art. If you simply love a pattern but want to confine it so it doesn’t , frame it. This pattern would look great above a mantle, too! Inside a bookcase—this peekaboo style works well in any room. Simply cut to size and cover the back of the shelf. We love this option because it can move from room to room, or if you are renting—to your next place, and still has high impact. Cover a tray—a basic tray is totally renewed with temporary wallpaper. When you aren’t using it to hold beverages for guests, lean it on the counter of your kitchen for a classy pop of color.
